Studer Community Institute Gingerbread House

The Gingerbread House Competition will run from 10 a.m – 1 p.m Saturday, Dec. 16, at the SCI building, 220 W. Garden St. Local residents and judges will choose the winner of the gingerbread competition, which includes prize money awarded to local bakers, artists, or anyone with gingerbread, frosting, and creativity. Also, this year’s competition will include participation from local high and middle school’s culinary arts academies as well as an elementary school showcase.

ENTRY

To be eligible for the competition/showcase, you must register via Eventbrite by 2:15 p.m. on Friday, December 8th. You must be able to attend the Gingerbread Competition, or have a representative attend, and drop your gingerbread house off between 7:45 a.m. – 9:00 a.m. on the day of the event. To be eligible for the adult individual or team division, you must be 18+ years old and pay the $50/person or $200/team entry fee. No more than 5 people are allowed per team. All proceeds go to benefit the Studer Community Institute – Early Brain Development Department. Your entry number will be given to you after registration. Please complete one (1) entry form per team.

DESIGN AND SIZE

Entry must be placed on a board base. Base must fit inside taped off section for entry. Entries combined with a base must not be larger than 18 inches high, 16 inches wide, and 24 inches long. 1⁄2 inch plywood as a base for your entry is recommended. Use of pegs/risers/feet on the bottom of the base is preferred but not required. If you wish to install pegs/risers/feet on the underside of your base, they are considered as part of the base and must not cause the entry’s overall height to exceed 18 inches.

MATERIALS AND CONSTRUCTION

The main structure must be constructed of at least 50% visible/exposed gingerbread. The use of gum paste, fondant, modeling chocolate, royal icing, Isomalt, cast sugar, gelatin and pressed sugar is highly encouraged. Do not use anything on the entry that needs refrigeration. The use of battery-powered electrics and non-edible materials is allowed.

JUDGING AND PRIZES

Judging will be held Saturday, December 16, 2023, prior to the event. Winners will be announced at 11:30 a.m., during the event. Entries will be judged on the following criteria: Overall Appearance and Appeal, Originality and Creativity, Difficulty, Precision and Neatness, and Consistency with the theme.
